Crooked Barn Vineyards grows grapes and crafts wine from Bordeaux varietals in Oregon’s Applegate Valley.

2018 Crooked Red Blend

A well-balanced red blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Tempranillo. Notes of raspberry, ripe plums, licorice, and hints of vanilla, elegant and well balanced.

2019 Crooked Red Blend

This beautiful and fruit forward blend brings back memories of last summer’s fresh strawberries laced with creamy chocolate and hints of pepper and licorice. The texture is thick, soft and complete.

2019 Cabernet Franc

Amid a hint of fresh herbs and crushed stone, the senses will detect black cherry, currant, anise and the notably ample and youthful chewy tannins will lead to a wine that will age gracefully. Well rounded mouth feel.

Expect flavors of wild black cherry, spices, and fresh cured leather all wrapped together with a dash of vanilla. Soft, but youthful tannins and the overall good balance of this wine creates delicious and complex layers that keep evolving on the palate. Aging 10 years.

2019 Merlot

On the nose, the earthiness of wet Oregon forest excite the senses followed by cherry, plum and spices and the subtle hint of cured leather. Silky and moderate tannins with ample volume create a beautiful good mouth feel with hints of anise, cocoa, olives and some vanilla and mocha. This wine will age nicely in the next 5 years and beyond.

Spread out across five acres, we are proud to grow four red Bordeaux varietals: Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Malbec. Applegate Valley’s mediterranean climate and our south-facing hillsides develop flavor and quality in our grapes. Our steep slopes ensure that harvest can only be done manually, and maintenance of the vineyard is made possible only by the use of a tractor crawler. Our vineyards are a labor of love.

The property was developed in 1913 and has primarily been used to graze cattle and for a time, raise foxes. We have 40 farmable acres and have 28 beautiful acres of madrone and oak woodland forest. We aspire to maintain the property’s original spirit, the namesake of our winery included, the Crooked Barn itself.

We believe in the philosophy of organic farming methods and land stewardship. We strive to leave our land richer than it was found.

“The vision for Crooked Barn Vineyards has always been simple: excellent grapes beget excellent wine.”

Our Story

Thirty two years ago, Marcos and Heidi Martins left Brazil to forge a future in America. Together they built a lovely life in the San Francisco Bay Area but a life that didn’t suggest a future other than quiet suburbia. After 37 years of marriage, successful careers, and raising their daughter, Petra, a real dream came to fruition. From wine classes, winery memberships, and Marcos’ involvement with a local chapter of backyard winemakers, they orchestrated the conception, evolution, and final product; Crooked Barn Vineyards.

It’s exactly this determination and fortitude that propelled them from the life they had so meticulously built to a future that promised excitement, creativity, and freedom. When searching for a location, Marcos was aware that soil and climate would uplift his beloved Bordeaux red varietals. Heidi wanted a soil and climate that would allow for an abundant organic vegetable and fruit garden. After much searching, southern Oregon shone like a beacon. And nearly six years later, this choice could not have been more perfect. This is because though location is part of what makes happy vines, community is what makes a location great. Friends and community of the Applegate Valley have welcomed and supported our dream more than they could have ever imagined. Thank you all.

The vision for Crooked Barn Vineyards has always been simple: excellent grapes beget excellent wine. The quality of wine develops years before a bottle is uncorked, and this is why, no matter the time of year, if you look up at the hill behind the Crooked Barn as you drive down Highway 238, you’ll see a lone figure tending to his vines. His attention to detail and care is what distinguishes CBV’s wine.
